A Kansas City builder with a hometown name
Based in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Wood River Construction pays tribute to the hometown of founder Chad Spencer.
Chad grew up in Wood River, Illinois, where he learned the value of hard work and witnessed his dad’s dedication to his job at the Clark Refinery. Chad’s parents didn’t just teach hard work; they modeled it.
Backed by more than two decades of experience, Wood River Construction specializes in residential outdoor spaces — decks, pergolas, railings and porches — in and around Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
Meet Chad Spencer
An experienced builder focused on honesty, integrity and quality
Chad Spencer leads Wood River as a general contractor, licensed and insured in both Missouri and Kansas. From framing homes, to historic remodels, he has done it all.
Years ago, he had the desire to focus on the outside. He didn’t want to just build decks; he wanted to build decks that would stand strong for generations. In 2022, Chad founded Wood River Construction to help homeowners enjoy their outdoor spaces.
Chad’s wife Sarah often says, “Chad builds decks like he puts on pickle jar lids.” Those who know Chad chuckle at this, knowing that he does everything with strength.
Not only is Chad a builder, but he’s also a teacher and a mentor. He exhibits this regularly as he trains members of his team. He’s a man of few words, but he means each word he says. A man of integrity, Chad has a huge heart and is committed to designing and building quality outdoor spaces for his customers.
Meet the Wood River Team
A team you can trust
Sarah Spencer, administrative assistant, is Wood River’s greatest cheerleader. She runs day-to-day operations, communicates with customers and coordinates schedules. When you call Wood River, she’s your first point of contact!
The rest of the Wood River crew is made up of Chad’s son Josiah, family friends and other stellar individuals. Chad doesn’t allow anyone on his crew who he wouldn’t trust with his own family. You have our promise on that.
Our company has a heart for Ugandan children
Chad and Sarah Spencer direct a small rescue/restoration home, Fields of Grace Ministries, that helps kids who were once trapped in orphanages. Through their ministry, vulnerable Ugandan children receive loving care, education and empowerment. A percentage of each Wood River build goes back to these very special children.
While Chad and Sarah have called Kansas City “home” for 25+ years, they spent three of those years in Uganda. Chad first went to Uganda in 2011. He and his good friend Dave toured an orphanage and were majorly impacted. As they left the orphanage and walked down the dirt road, Chad coined the phrase, “If it’s not okay for my kids, it’s not okay for these ones.” This has been the mission statement for Fields of Grace since its inception in 2015.
